Few watches can really claim to have left their mark on the history of watchmaking, or to have single-handedly made the fortune of the brand that created them, but the Girard-Perregaux Laureato is a strong contender for both titles.
Born in 1975, the Laureato is an elegant sports watch, suitable for wearing on any occasion. This timepiece is easily recognised by its trademark octagonal bezel set within a circle. The watch’s name was clearly inspired by a recent cinema release, The Graduate – or “Il Laureato” – featuring Dustin Hoffman.
The original version of this timepiece was powered by a quartz movement which, at the time, was particularly refined. After the boom of the 70s and 80s, the watch somewhat faded from view, making a spectacular comeback 40 years after its first launch to mark the company’s 225th anniversary.
Today, the Girard-Perregaux Laureato collection offers some 36 variations on its theme: for example, the case comes in four different sizes, to appeal to both a male and female audience. Its trademark octagonal bezel comes in a variety of polished and satin finishes. From the Chronograph or the Laureato Absolute to the Skeleton or Laureato Tourbillon models, this timepiece’s clean and distinctive lines make it an eternal classic.
